This workshop will present major historical and philosophical influences on the development of our current biomedical model and describe some of the recent developments in mind/body medicine.

Goals and Objectives:

Participants will learn:

1. To understand the major historical and philosophical influences on the development of our current biomedical model, the dominant approach to health care.
2. To appreciate some of the research and alternative thinking that has allowed an increased breadth of awareness and observation in the development of mind body medicine.
3. To learn one example of the mind body connection through a brief explanation of the relaxation response and its effect on the body, in particular, on the immune system and healing.

Dr. Anne Madigan is a member of the Canadian College of Family Physicians and practices family medicine and family therapy in Toronto, Canada. She is Assistant Professor at The University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Madigan received a Masters of Social Work from Carleton University and a Masters of Science, Econ. from The London School of Economics and Political Science. She graduated from McMaster University with a medical degree. Currently she is involved in the development of a Mind-Body Medicine program in Toronto in collaboration with a wide variety of health care providers.
